Why we’re building it

Why we’re building it

Every merchant asks the same question once the numbers are in front of them: is this good? Shopify shows your own store. It doesn’t show you what normal looks like for a store your size.

The report answers that with real profit numbers, not revenue alone: what stores keep after ad spend, fees, shipping and COGS, grouped by store size and category.

It will be published once a year. No store is ever identified, and every figure is aggregated across many stores.

What the first edition will cover

Three numbers merchants ask us about most.

Net margin by category.

What stores in fashion, beauty, home and other categories keep once ad spend, fees, shipping and COGS are counted.

CAC, AOV and repeat rate by size.

Benchmarks grouped by store size, so you compare against brands like yours.

What discounts really cost.

How much margin promotions take from the average store, and whether discounted orders come back to buy again.
